John’s Spanish Chronicles
My
first week in Caceres, Spain has been very exciting, beautiful, interesting,
and rewarding. Although I have been
abroad before, Spain offers a side of life for which I have longed for many
years. The city is very picturesque,
historic, and tranquil, unlike the modern look and hustle and bustle of
Chicago. There’s also the difference of
amenities. Spain allows for one to have
what is needed, unlike the United States where superfluity is the aim. The amenities are modest but comfortable and
facilitate a very warm, familiar setting.
I
live in Parte Antigua, the oldest section of Caceres. The city, at one time, was surrounded by
walls for protection from enemies, and they still stand today. There are many
cathedrals within Parte Antigua. It
contains a maze of streets, called berintos in Spanish, and the streets are
cobblestone lain, providing a rustic sense of history. There is also the Plaza
Mayor, which was the central meeting place of the city. The plaza still functions as a meeting place
for family and friends. Upon arriving to
Caceres, the Plaza Mayor was the location for WOMAD, a music festival where
different acts performed.
The
most amazing part of this excursion has been the sense of history I feel. To imagine that I am walking cobblestone
streets that have existed since the 12th century is
mindboggling. Millions of feet have trod
these stone streets, and now I have the opportunity to do the same! To see the streets I have only seen in movies
is awesome! It’s hard to believe that
the narrow streets accommodate for cars, parked and driving, as well as
pedestrians. Not only that, but also the home where I live is in close
proximity to the mountains! Just to be
able to have what you need so close is absolutely amazing!
